Notice this exact same thing happening with recipes online. Someone will swear their grandma's meatloaf is the only correct way, then five people jump in saying "actually, you have to use breadcrumbs, not crackers" or "375 degrees is way too hot, you're drying it out." People get SO attached to what they know from their own kitchen or their own garage that anything different feels like a personal attack. It's like once someone's convinced themselves their way is the best way, they'll fight tooth and nail over the tiniest detail, whether it's a serpentine belt or a pinch of salt.

Forty bucks stings hard, especially when you weren't expecting it. Had something similar happen with a parking ticket situation last month where I just tossed the cash without checking the meter first. The worst part is the feeling of being stupid about it, not just the money itself. At least you know for next time but still, that's a whole takeout order or a tank of gas down the drain.
