Thought a guy at the shop in Phoenix was messing with me about seating tubeless with a floor pump, turns out I was the joke
He kept saying you don't need a compressor if you do it right, just soapy water on the bead and pump fast and hard. I rolled my eyes for about 3 weeks until my compressor died mid job on a Saturday with a customer waiting. So I tried it, 2 tablespoons of dish soap in a spray bottle, and that tire popped onto the rim on the 4th hard stroke, louder than any compressor I ever used. Now I do it that way on purpose even with air sitting right there, it's just faster and I don't have to drag the hose out. The trick is you have to push the tire down into the drop center on the opposite side or it just hisses at you forever though. Anybody got a rim/tire combo where this flat out will not work? I've been lucky so far but I know there's a stubborn one out there waiting for me.

Watched a guy at a trailhead do this with a mini bottle of Dawn he keeps in his pack and I laughed at him too, then he rode off while I was still standing there holding my useless CO2. The thing that got me was how much soap matters, the watery stuff I mixed up first did nothing but once it was good and thick it just slid right on. Tubeless is one of those deals where the old guys know something and we all act too cool to listen.
