Serious question, did anyone else think open source AI models were way behind until they saw the numbers from a Stanford report?
I always figured the big paid models were miles ahead of anything free, mostly because that is what all the headlines push. Then I read the 2024 Stanford AI Index, which found that open models had basically closed the gap on many benchmarks, and now I feel silly for writing off the free stuff for so long. Has anyone here actually switched their day to day work over to an open model, and if so, what made you finally pull the trigger?
Did you feel kinda dumb after reading that report too? I had the same exact reaction because every tech site keeps saying you need to pay for the good stuff. I finally tried Llama 3 for some coding help at home and it honestly handled most of what I threw at it, plus running it locally meant no monthly bill and my data stayed on my own machine. The gap is real now, and the free ones are only getting better from here.
