Last month I started watching 'Space: Above and Beyond' from 1995 on a streaming deep cut, and it completely hooked me after two episodes. The practical effects and tight military storytelling held up way better than I expected. Has anyone else found an old show that surprised them like this?

A client's offhand comment about my line weights made me switch up my whole layer system.

They said the details on a mechanical drawing were getting lost because everything was too uniform. Now I use a specific set of three weights for object, hidden, and center lines in every file. Anyone else have a simple rule that cleaned up their drawings?

I thought those magnetic water softeners were just snake oil for years.

A customer in Fort Worth insisted his unit stopped his dishwasher from spotting, so I tested the water hardness before and after a month. The numbers didn't budge, but the glasses were actually clearer, so maybe it's doing something to the minerals? Has anyone else run into a job where the fix made no sense but still seemed to work?

Why does nobody talk about the fire code rule on smoke detector spacing in old buildings?

I was reading through the 2021 NFPA 72 handbook last week for a job in a 1920s brick apartment house. I always thought the 30 foot rule for smoke alarms was pretty solid. But the book said in rooms with ceilings over 10 feet high, you need to cut that spacing down to 21 feet. I've been putting them 30 feet apart in these high ceiling lobbies for years. It makes sense when you think about how smoke spreads, but I never had an inspector call me on it before. Found it on page 29.4.3.1. Now I'm going back to check my last three jobs in similar buildings. Has anyone else run into this, or had an inspector actually measure the spacing on a final?

Tried a different underlayment on a concrete basement job and got a weird result

Honestly, I was doing a glue down LVP install in an old basement in Cincinnati last month. The slab felt dry, but you know how that goes. Instead of my usual 6 mil poly, the homeowner had already bought this fancy 3-in-1 underlayment with a built in vapor barrier and sound rating. I figured, why not, it's their material. Ngl, after about three days, I got a call. The planks were making this loud popping sound when you walked on them, like a hundred tiny snaps. It wasn't buckling, just noise. I think the combo of the slab's minor moisture and that specific underlayment's foam layer created some kind of suction or movement. I learned that even if a product says it's for concrete, the exact conditions matter a ton. Has anyone else had a basement floor go noisy from the underlayment choice?

Just figured out why my high-pressure oil pump kept failing

Felt that in my gut. Three pumps in eight months and nobody thought to pull the screen until the third one? That's not just bad luck, that's a lack of basic troubleshooting. I've seen the same thing happen with a buddy's 7.3, he swapped two pumps before I told him to check the IPR screen and it was packed with glitter. Cleaned it, pressure came back, but we knew it was just a matter of time before the real problem showed up. That cheap tarp shelter I set up last weekend nearly ripped my tent apart

The heavy duty tarps with reinforced edges are worth every penny. I picked up one from a farm supply store for like 20 bucks and it's held up through a couple nasty storms without a single grommet pulling out. I also started using those screw-in tent stakes instead of the cheap wire ones for the tarp lines, makes a HUGE difference in holding tension. Just takes a few extra minutes to set it up right and you wont be chasing your tarp through the woods at 2 AM.

Is it just me or does @lee582 have a point? Getting called out at that rate would sting for sure. But honestly, the specificity thing is real. I switched to including a "do not mention" section after a client once used every single phrase I told them to avoid.
