Spent 3 weekends trying to find a water source on the Cohutta loop, and it was a 40 cent map fix
Last spring I planned a 3 day loop in the Cohutta Wilderness out of Georgia and kept hitting a wall. The route I wanted crossed a couple of creeks that showed up fine in my head but on the ground they were dry, and I could not figure out where to top off water. I burned two whole weekends rerouting on my phone and one more weekend hiking a section just to test a spring that turned out to be a mud puddle with a dead leaf in it. Turns out the fix was a $12 paper USGS quad I picked up at a ranger station outside Chatsworth. The map showed a spring about a quarter mile off my planned path that no app had on it, plus it marked a creek that runs year round. I spent maybe an hour with a highlighter after that and the whole loop worked fine. The thing that got me was how long I kept trusting one source instead of just buying a backup map. Anyone else had a route fall apart just because the water info was bad?
