Customer in Boise asked why her brakes squeal, and my answer got me thinking about the whole trade
Had a lady pick up her Trek Marlin 5 at the shop here in Boise on Thursday and she goes "my neighbor says you guys just spray stuff on there to shut it up." I laughed at first, then got kinda mad because that poor guy probably got burned by some hack who degreased rotors and called it fixed. I spent the next ten minutes showing her the contaminated pad and explaining why we sand, clean with isopropyl, and bed them in on a real ride. How do you all handle customers who come in with bad info from a buddy who "works on bikes"?
Ever had a guy stand there and tell you his buddy's method is better while you're holding the actual glazed pad in your hand? What works for me is not arguing about it, just showing them. I hold up the old pad next to a fresh one and let them feel the difference, then explain the bed-in process in plain steps so they can see it's real work, not a spray can. If they still push back I tell them the buddy is welcome to do the next brake job and we'll both see how it goes. Most folks come around once they see the parts, and the ones who don't were never going to listen anyway.
