Update: My first real AI chatbot demo crashed in front of 20 people
I was showing a client in Austin a custom support bot I built with our internal docs. Halfway through the demo, it started answering every question with a quote from our refund policy. The client asked 'what are your hours?' and the bot said 'refunds take 5 to 7 business days.' I froze for a second, then just said 'this is why we test in production.' Turns out the issue was a bad keyword filter I added the night before. I fixed it live and reran the same question, it worked fine. Client laughed it off and we closed the deal anyway. Has anyone else had a demo fail in a way that actually helped you look more human?

That bit about it making you look more human is kind of backwards though. The bot wasn't acting human, it was acting broken. What made you look human was your recovery. People forgive failure way easier than they forgive faking it. And honestly, saying "this is why we test in production" is a great move, it owns the mess without groveling. Still, dont let that success fool you into thinking crashes are charming. That one time works, the fifth time it makes you look sloppy.
