A guy at the Lansing Walmart told me to quit spraying my air fryer basket with Pam, and he was right
I was standing in the small appliance aisle at the Walmart on West Saginaw in Lansing about two weeks ago, just grabbing a new pack of parchment liners, when this older guy next to me noticed the can of cooking spray in my hand and kind of chuckled. He said his wife ruined the coating on two baskets in under a year by spraying them direct, because the propellant and the lecithin bake into a sticky film that you cannot scrub off without taking the nonstick with it. I told him I had been doing it for 8 months on my 5.8 quart basket with no problem, and he just shrugged and said wait until the shine goes dull, then everything sticks no matter how much oil you use. So I went home and looked at my basket under the kitchen light and sure enough there was this brownish haze across the bottom that I thought was just normal seasoning. I tried the baking soda paste trick he mentioned, and the haze came off in a gray sludge that honestly grossed me out a little. Long story short, I switched to brushing a tiny bit of oil on with a silicone brush, and my wings came out crispier than ever with zero sticking. Has anyone else had a coating go bad early from spray, or am I the only one who got lucky for a while?
