A fuel leak on a Cessna in Bozeman taught me to trust the sniff test
Last Tuesday I was doing a preflight on a 172 at Bozeman Yellowstone and caught a whiff of avgas near the left wing root. Instead of writing it off, I pulled the cowling and found a worn fuel line fitting that was weeping just enough to stain the belly. The owner was not happy about the $220 part, but it beat the alternative of finding out in the air. Anyone else ever catch a problem just from smell before you saw a single drop?
