A client's old hedge question made me miss the old days

We were out in Boulder trimming a row of junipers this week and the homeowner asked if I remembered when folks used to shape these into spirals and animals. That got me thinking about the late 90s when I started, everyone wanted those crazy topiaries and I'd spend a full day on one bush with hand shears. Now it's all natural pruning and clean lines, and honestly the work is faster but something feels lost. I used to love the challenge of sculpting something wild, even if the client changed their mind halfway through and I had to redo it. These days most of my jobs are maintenance and hazard stuff, which pays the bills but it's not the same. Any old timers out there miss the funky stuff, or am I just being nostalgic about a fade that should stay gone?
