Eight years in and I just realized my felling notch was backwards
Was doing a takedown in a tight backyard near Milwaukee last Tuesday and the tree pinched my bar so bad I had to winch it off the stump. Older guy walking by asked why my notch was facing the lean instead of the fall direction, and it hit me like a brick. I always watched the hinge, never thought about the notch face... now I'm wondering what other basic stuff I've been messing up. Anyone else have a 'wait, that's not right' moment that made you question years of habit?
Learned last spring that I'd been setting my hinge way too thick for years because nobody ever told me it should be about 10 percent of the trunk diameter. Made sense why my trees kept barber chairing on me. Tbh it stings knowing how many clean cuts I messed up just from copying what I saw growing up instead of actually learning it right.
