Lost a big maple in my neighborhood last week...
Had a client in Portland call me after a storm dropped a 60-foot silver maple on their garage. The trunk had a huge cavity I missed during a inspection back in March. Anyone else start carrying a mallet to tap trunks for hollow spots now?

Using a mallet won't tell you much more than a good tap with your knuckles would. The real trick is using a drill to probe suspect spots, just keep the bit shallow so you don't damage live wood.
