200,000 pieces of flint at the Boxgrove site in England, and I keep thinking about the one handaxe I saw in 1989
I read a dig report counting over 200,000 flint pieces at Boxgrove, mostly tiny sharpening flakes, which means someone sat in that exact spot near Chichester and knapped for generations. The handaxe I got to hold as a kid had a tiny nick from reworking, and that little flaw is the closest I will ever get to a real person from half a million years back. Does anyone else here care more about the mistakes on a tool than the perfect ones?
