Appreciation post: The week we found a Roman coin hoard under a parking lot in Bristol
The debate is whether we should excavate the entire site immediately or leave part of it undisturbed for future tech, as my team lead argued we might damage more than we save by rushing.

Totally agree with your team lead. We rushed a dig last year and wrecked a whole layer of pottery shards trying to get to the "good stuff" fast. Felt awful, like @hunt.hayden's story. Sometimes the best move is to just map it carefully and wait.

My buddy's team dug up a Saxon brooch and crushed three others trying to save it.

That "map it carefully and wait" plan sounds nice in theory. But stuff degrades fast once it's exposed. Sometimes you have to make a call and live with the outcome.
