I dig test pits at a site outside Erie, PA, and I used to think I needed a $70 Marshalltown to do clean work. A retired surveyor named Hal watched me fumble a 1x1 meter unit in April and told me my problem was the diamond blade on a marshall, not the price tag, and that a basic pointing trowel would give me better control on my profile walls. I tried his tip for 3 weekends and my wall shots got straighter, so now I keep the cheap one in my bucket. Anyone else here skip the brand name tools and just use whatever holds an edge?
