Found 37 Roman coins in one trench at Vindolanda and now I'm hooked on counting
Last month our dig at Vindolanda hit 37 coins in a single trench, and I realized that number means more to me than any single shiny find because it shows the site had steady daily traffic, so has anyone else had a count number that surprised them more than the artifacts themselves?
Counting pottery sherds worked the same way for me. Got 400 plus rim pieces out of one dump layer and it told me way more about how long people lived there than any single stamped bowl did. Numbers like that turn a pile of junk into a story about everyday life.
