Found a 200-year-old bottle while digging a garden bed in Ohio, my method was wrong

I was clearing roots behind my shed in Dayton and uncovered this squat, dark glass bottle with a lumpy lip, figured it was just trash and almost tossed it. My neighbor who does relic hunting said the air bubbles and the seam line means it was hand blown, and that I should have soaked it in water before touching the surface with a metal scraper. Has anyone else damaged a find by cleaning it too fast, and is there a way to fix mineral crust without ruining the patina?
