Rant: I called that 2,000 year old Roman coin a fake for 3 weeks til a museum in York tested it
Bought it at a flea market in York for 40 quid and I told everyone it was a tourist trap reproduction, even posted about it here saying the patina looked off. A curator at the Yorkshire Museum ran an XRF scan and it came back 89% silver with a legit Marcus Aurelius mint mark, so I had to eat a lot of words. Anyone else been totally wrong about a find and had to backtrack in public?
89% silver is wild for a 40 quid flea market buy. Did the curator say anything about how the patina got so off looking, like was it a bad cleaning job or just sitting in the ground somewhere weird?
