That time someone told me my astro photos had too much noise

A guy in this community pointed out my stacked images were too noisy because I wasn't taking enough dark frames, so I started doing 15-20 per session and the difference is huge. Do you usually match the number of darks to your lights or go with a minimum?

Wait, you were shooting astrophotos without enough dark frames? That's wild to me, I thought everyone knew that was like rule number one. Idk, maybe it's just me but I always match my darks to my lights at least 20 each if I can.

Rule number one" around here is not leaving the lens cap on, hah. Learned that one the hard way.

kevin might be talking about lens caps but troy you're spot on with the dark frames thing. I've messed that up more times than I'd like to admit. The one that really got me was when I spent a whole night shooting the Orion nebula and realized later I forgot to cover the viewfinder on my DSLR. Light leaked right through and ruined half my subs. Now I just tape over that little hole with some electrical tape before I even set up. Also, if you're shooting in cold weather, your camera sensor heats up slower so you need to wait like 15 minutes before taking darks to match the temperature of your lights. Learned that one after a bunch of noisy calibration frames.
