Drove 45 minutes to a meetup that was all sales pitches
Used to hit every Atlanta tech mixer I could find, thinking more face time meant more work. Now I only go to ones with a posted agenda and cap it at 8 people, like the one at Manuel's Tavern last month. The old approach gave me 30 business cards and zero real projects. Anyone else filter out the bigger events for smaller, actual conversations?
The posted agenda rule is solid, that is the first thing I learned too. I stopped going anywhere that says "networking" without telling you who is speaking or what the actual topic is. My cutoff is 12 people now, and I always message the organizer beforehand to ask who else is confirmed. If they dodge the question or say "a diverse group of professionals", I stay home. Smaller meetups have saved me hours of fake small talk and honestly, the one good client I got came from a five person roundtable, not a big room. You might try bringing a specific problem to the table at your next small one, people love giving advice on real stuff.
