Unpopular opinion: I stopped welding patch panels with MIG and went back to oxy-acetylene on my 69 Camaro
I run a small shop in Bakersfield and for a few years I did every quarter panel and rocker with my MIG. Fast, cheap, done. Then I got a 69 Camaro in with a rear window channel that was ate up bad. I tried patch after patch with the wire and kept getting warping, plus grinding down welds on thin 20 gauge is a nightmare. Went back to the torch with a small tip and 1/16 rod. Slower for sure, maybe 3x the time. But the metal moves way less and I can planish the weld as I go. Showed the owner the window channel and he said it looked like it came that way from the factory. So I'm sticking with it on sheet metal. Anyone else still running a torch for body panels in 2024 or am I the last guy doing it the old way?
