I stopped pulling battery cables to reset codes, and my comeback rate dropped
Everyone says just yank the negative cable for 10 minutes to clear a light, but on a 2016 Silverado that came in Tuesday it wiped the adaptive fuel trims and the truck ran rough for 20 miles. I hooked up my $80 scan tool and did a proper relearn instead, took 15 minutes and the guy never came back. Anybody else think the cable trick causes more problems than it fixes?
My buddy Rick had a 2014 F150 doing the same thing last month. He pulled the cable on it to kill a check engine light and the truck shifted like garbage for two days after. Turned out the transmission had to relearn its shift points and he got a come back anyway when the light popped right back on. The code was a real problem, not a fluke, so wiping it just hid it for a bit. He bought a cheap scanner after that and started doing the relearn the right way. I keep telling people the cable trick is from the old days when cars were dumb. These newer trucks remember everything and you mess them up when you yank power
