Just realized that timing belt "rule" cost me a $1,200 repair

Old mechanic named Gary at the NAPA in Tucson told me timing belts are good for 100k miles no matter what. I followed that advice on my 2017 Accord and the belt snapped at 97k. Took out three valves and left me stranded on I-10 last Tuesday. Turns out Honda revised their recommendation to 60k for that engine in hot climates. Anyone else get burned by outdated advice from the old guard?

Your mechanic buddy might not be totally wrong, just outdated - Honda buried that 60k recommendation in a technical service bulletin that most independent shops never see. A quick VIN check on the Honda owner site would've caught it before you hit the road.

Makes me think of the timing belt I toasted on my girlfriend's Civic.

Wait, did you replace it yourself or have a shop do it? Just wondering cause that belt job on the Civic is a pain in the ass without the right tools.
