Guy at a dyno day in Phoenix said my timing was 'too safe,' and I still can't decide if he was right
Last month at a dyno day outside Phoenix, some guy watched my last pull, shook his head, and said 'you're leaving 18 horsepower on the table running that safe.' That got to me. One side says pulling a few degrees of timing protects the motor and a few ponies don't matter on a daily. The other side says you built it to make power, so why baby it, and the tuner logging it will catch knock before anything lets go. He was confident enough that I pulled two degrees back in the parking lot. Did he have a point or was he just repeating forum stuff? Curious what you all run on a street car.

Man, I did the same thing last summer on my LS swap, pulled timing after a guy at the track told me I was being a wimp. Ran it for two weeks and it felt slower everywhere, not just up top. Put the timing back and got it logged on a dyno with a wideband, and the tuner said it was fine on 91 with the air we get here. That said, Phoenix heat is no joke, so if you're daily driving in July I'd keep it a touch safe and not chase 18hp you only feel at redline.
