PSA: the old guy at the dyno shop in Tacoma said to gap my plugs at .028 and I ran .045 for two years
Ngl I felt pretty dumb after this one. When I first started messing with my turbo Miata, my buddy who got me into wrenching said to just run stock plug gap and not overthink it, so I did that for about two years and always wondered why it broke up past 5k rpm under boost. Last Tuesday I took the car to a shop in Tacoma to get it on the dyno and the owner, this guy named Ray who has been tuning imports since the 90s, pulled a plug and just shook his head at me. He said run them at .028 with the boost I'm pushing and stop guessing. We regapped all four in like 20 minutes and the pull was clean all the way to redline, picked up 14 whp on the same tune. I had been chasing that miss with new coils and a fuel pump for a year and it was a five dollar fix the whole time. So now I want to know, what is the dumbest piece of advice you got early on that cost you real time and money before you figured it out?
