Vent: picking between a Garmin G5 and a vacuum AI in my old Cherokee, and the cheaper option actually worked out
My attitude indicator in my 1966 Cherokee 180 started tumbling on a flight out of Fresno last month, so I had to pick a path. I could either hunt down a rebuilt vacuum AI and keep the old system, or spend about double and drop in a Garmin G5 and go electric. I went back and forth for a solid week because part of me wanted to keep the plane stock and part of me was sick of vacuum pumps failing at the worst time. I pulled the trigger on the G5 after a buddy said he'd done three of them and never looked back. Install was tighter than I expected because I had to run new power and deal with the old gyro panel space, but the shop got it signed off in about a day and a half. Flew it over to Modesto and back last Saturday and the thing never wandered once, which felt great after years of chasing drift. Now I'm second guessing whether I should do the DG next or leave it alone, so if you've run a G5 with an old mechanical DG still in the panel, did the mismatch bug you or did you just live with it?
