A guy on the Eagle Rock loop told me at mile 14 to flip my map upside down, and he was right
I was 14 miles into the Eagle Rock loop in Arkansas last month and totally turned around at a fork, so I sat down to cry about it. This older guy with a 30 year old external frame pack stopped, looked at my map, flipped it upside down and said 'you keep matching the map to the mountain, try matching the mountain to the map.' Turned out I was holding it 180 degrees off the whole time, so my question is has anyone else had a random stranger fix a dumb mistake that you would have spent hours figuring out on your own?
The map thing works because your brain gets stuck seeing the same wrong thing over and over, not because the guy was smarter than you. Sometimes you just need new eyes, even if those eyes are on a dude with a pack older than you are.
