A wrong turn off the Eagle Lake trail in 2011 taught me to write down every junction
Back in 2011 I was doing the Eagle Lake loop near Tahoe with a buddy and we got cocky about the map. We blew past a fork where the trail doubles back on itself and ended up walking an extra 4 miles on a horse trail that just faded into the trees. By the time we figured it out the sun was already behind the ridge and we had to pull out headlamps way earlier than planned. What got me was that the junction had looked obvious on paper but the actual sign was half busted and facing the wrong way. Since then I keep a little notebook and I literally write the junctions down as I pass them, like "left at the burned stump, right at the creek crossing." It sounds dumb until you need it, and now my trip notes have pages of this stuff that nobody else would understand. The other thing I do now is snap a photo of any sign I see, even the boring ones. Curious if anyone else has a weird habit like this that came from one bad day out there?
