The old guy at the diner who called out my writing habits

Back in 2018 I was sitting at a Denny's in Ohio, scribbling ideas on a napkin for a short story. An old man at the next booth asked what I was doing, then said "You're typing too fast in your head, slow down and feel the words first." He told me about how he used to write letters to his wife during the war, one page at a time with a pencil. I still write my first drafts by hand because of that. Have you ever had a stranger give you advice that actually changed how you work?

Was skeptical about automated follow-up sequences until I tried one

I used to think all those automated email sequences were just spammy nonsense. But after losing a $3,200 job last fall because I forgot to follow up with a client in Cleveland, I finally set one up. Three weeks later a different client replied to a check-in email and booked a full brake job and some suspension work. Has anyone else had automated follow-ups actually work for them or am I just getting lucky?

Warning: Found out my injector cups were off by 0.002 inches

I was pulling injectors on a 2008 Cummins ISX in Atlanta last Tuesday and decided to mic the cups before slapping new ones in. Turns out two of them were out of round by 0.002", which is basically nothing but the manual says it'll kill the seal. Anyone else ever find stuff that's technically within spec but still causes issues down the road?

The comic shop owner in Portland told me I was reading graphic novels wrong

I walked into this small shop on Hawthorne last month looking for a new series. The owner saw me flip through a book and stop at the action scenes. He asked if I ever read the dialogue first before looking at the art. I told him no, I just scan the pictures. He said I was missing half the story because the words and images work together in ways you don't see at first. He pulled out a copy of Maus and made me read a page slowly, looking at the panels in order. I had always treated comics like movies in my head, just fast and visual. Now I spend about 10 minutes on a single page and catch things I never noticed before. Has anyone else had a shop owner change how they read comics?

PSA: Check your oven's bottom element before a big bake

I was making my grandma's honey cake recipe yesterday, a whole three-layer deal for a birthday. Put the first pan in, set the timer, and after 20 minutes... nothing. It was still raw batter. The bottom heating coil had just gone out completely. Had to finish the layers one at a time using only the broiler, which was a total mess. Anyone know a good appliance repair person in the Tacoma area, or should I just start shopping for a new oven?

PSA: I just hit 1,000 hours of total exposure time on my deep sky images.

It snuck up on me when I was adding up data from the Horsehead Nebula shot last week. All those late nights in my backyard in Boise, just letting the camera run. Makes you realize how much patience this hobby really needs. Anyone else track their total integration time and get surprised by the number?

A client's comment about her skin last month really made me think

I was doing a facial for a regular, a woman in her late 50s, and we were talking about her routine. She said, 'You know, Sean, I don't need to look 30 again. I just want my skin to look like mine, but happy.' It happened right here in my treatment room in Tacoma. That simple line stuck with me for weeks. It shifted my focus from just fighting signs of aging to really listening to what 'healthy' means for each person. Vent: I used to just apply to any job posting, but focusing on companies I actually liked got me a real offer

For about a year, I was sending my resume to every open role that even slightly matched my skills. It was a numbers game, right? I probably sent out 200 applications. Then a friend in Phoenix told me to pick five companies I really admired and learn everything about them. I spent a week just reading their blogs, watching their videos, and finding people who worked there on LinkedIn. When I applied to one of those five, I wrote a cover letter that mentioned a specific project they did in 2023. I got a call back in two days and an offer three weeks later. The difference was showing I cared about their work, not just needing a job. Has anyone else had luck with this more focused approach instead of blasting applications everywhere?
