Hot take: the mason who trained me made me tear out a perfect wall on purpose
Back in 2018 I was two weeks into a job on a garage in Council Bluffs and I was feeling good, my courses were dead level, joints were tight, and I was moving fast. The old guy running the crew, Dale, walked up, looked at about 40 square feet of wall I'd just finished, and said "take it down." I asked him why and he just pointed at the corner. I had run the brick tight to a 2x4 that the framer was supposed to pull before I got there, and he never did, so I'd built right against it. Dale could have told me to check it himself, but instead he handed me a chisel and watched me knock down an hour of work so the wall could breathe on that side. Cost me most of an afternoon and a couple dozen brick that chipped on the way out. Anyway, I still check every corner before I lay a single course because of that day. Did anybody else get taught by the take-it-down method or was my guy just mean?
