Got cliffed out on the Colchuck Lake trail in Washington and had to sleep on a rock slab
Two summers back I was doing the Colchuck Lake route near Leavenworth and took a wrong turn past the boulder field that dropped me onto a steep slab with no way forward or back. I sat there for about 40 minutes (felt like 4 hours) watching the light go, then just curled up on a flat patch and waited for morning. Turned out I was only 200 feet from the actual trail the whole time, which my map app would've shown if I'd bothered to check the elevation lines. Now I trace my route on paper the night before and mark bailout spots with a Sharpie. Anyone got a better trick for reading those rocky sections on a phone screen without losing the plot?
