Maps app fail meant I spent the night with a super chatty couple on the John Muir Trail
My phone died so I used a bad map. Had to camp near them and got a full relationship history. Now I carry a paper guide.

Honestly paper maps can get you lost too, just quieter.

The John Muir Trail thing sounds rough but people overshare everywhere. Had a guy at the bus stop tell me about his divorce for 20 minutes last Tuesday. It happens at coffee shops, waiting rooms, you name it. Getting an unwanted story feels pretty standard for being around other humans. Not really a special hiking horror story.

Wait, they gave you their full relationship history? That's the real nightmare right there (way worse than just being lost, honestly). You can find your way back to a trail, but you can't unhear all that personal stuff from strangers. A quiet wrong turn with a paper map sounds like a dream compared to that. I'd take being a little lost over being a trapped therapist any day. That experience would make me pack a paper map too, no question.
1
