One hiker's comment made me ditch my bear canister routine
Was on the Wonderland Trail last August, cramming a 2.5 pound canister into my pack like I always did. A thru-hiker called it overkill for that route, said the lockers at Mowich Lake were solid. Swapped to an Ursack for that loop, saved weight and zero issues. Anyone else find canisters are overkill on well-established routes?
Buddy of mine did the same thing on the JMT last year. He lugged his canister the whole way and barely used it cause the bear boxes at the campsites were always empty. Then on the last night some guy told him the same thing and he just left it in the car for a day hike. He said the only time he ever needed it was when he camped off trail one night, so now he only brings it when he does more remote stuff. Seems like the big routes have enough infrastructure that a bag or even a hang works fine most of the time.
