A guy at a trade show in Charlotte told me I was wasting my time with 2D detail views

Oh man, that older drafter was onto something! It's not just about saving time on updates, it's about cutting out the whole middle step. If the fabricator has the model, they can pull their own sections and details right from it, exactly how they need to see it for their machines. That means fewer questions back to you and way less chance they misread your 2D drawing. The time you save on revisions alone makes the switch worth it.

TIL a trick for pulling wire through a long, cold conduit run

The foam earplug trick works better than a bag.

Spotted a bad battery toss at the airport this morning

Absolutely. It goes beyond just having bins at shops, though that's a good start. We need clear rules that make companies take back their old batteries, no questions asked. The cost of cleaning up a fire or a polluted water supply is so much higher than setting up a simple return system. It has to be easy for everyone, or it just won't happen.

Warning: The new digital door lock tester from Dynatech cost me $350 and it's been a headache

That software freezing is the worst. I had the exact same problem with my phone, and it makes the whole tool useless when you're on a job. In my experience, you just can't trust a tool that fails when you need it most. I ended up going back to my old reliable meter and a simple test lead setup. It takes a minute longer, but at least it works every single time.

Just finished a job on a 1920s house in Albany, the difference in draft after cleaning a completely blocked flue was night and day.

Actually found it pretty clean up there, just a lot of dust and some old insulation that had settled. (Which, honestly, was a relief.) I was kind of hoping for something more interesting, like a forgotten box of letters or something. Old birds' nests would have at least been a story to tell.
