Saw a full wall of slab doors at a shop in Grand Rapids and now I'm rethinking my face frame habit
Stopped by a shop tour in Grand Rapids last month and the guy had every cabinet built as slab doors with a 1/8 inch reveal, dead straight, no stiles at all. Made me wonder if I'm wasting hours on face frames for clients who'd never notice the difference, anyone here made that switch and regretted it?
Made that switch about four years ago and the only thing I regret is not doing it sooner. Slab doors with a tight reveal look cleaner, and clients actually notice the straight lines way more than they ever noticed the frame. Biggest thing to watch is your box construction, because without a face frame hiding things you need dead square cases or the gaps will show every mistake. Also budget for better hinges since full overlay slab doors need soft close that holds up, cheaper ones start sagging and then the reveals look off. The labor savings are real, but put some of that time back into casework and hardware or it'll bite you.
