Rant: a ranger at Shenandoah convinced me to flip my route and skip the campsites
I planned my 3 day loop in Shenandoah around hitting all the shelters, but a backcountry ranger named Dave pointed at my map and asked why I was walking past two water sources to sleep in a crowded spot. He showed me the elevation profile and I was gaining 900 extra feet on day 2 for nothing. So I flipped the route and camped at a ridge spot 2 miles before the shelter instead. Ended up with the whole view to myself. Anyone else rework a trip after one person points out something obvious on the map?
Man that ranger saved your whole trip and you didnt even know it yet. Ive had the same thing happen where someone just looks at your plan for two seconds and goes "why are you doing that" and suddenly you feel like an idiot but also grateful. The shelter crowd thing is so real too, nothing worse than hauling ass all day just to share a spot with 15 people snoring. Ridge camping beats a shelter every time if the weather is decent. Good on you for actually listening instead of getting stubborn about the original plan.
