The 2018 JMT resupply mess that changed my food planning
Back in 2018 on the John Muir Trail I mailed a bear canister to Reds Meadow with too much food, figured my pace would hold. Then a snowstorm hit and I spent 3 extra days at Muir Trail Ranch, ran out of dinners by Tuolumne. Now I plan every resupply with two buffer days built in and call the post office before I leave town. Has anyone else had a resupply timing issue blow up their whole stretch?
Ugh, that sounds like a total nightmare! I mean, the snowstorm alone would mess with anyone's plans, but running out of food makes it so much worse. I've had a similar thing happen with a mail drop being late, and now I basically panic-buy snacks every chance I get. Two buffer days sounds smart, honestly, maybe I should copy that. The whole "call the post office" trick is something I never think to do, but it makes so much sense. Trail plans never go the way you draw them up, for sure.
