Buried a $40 soil test kit in my raised beds last spring and the results made me question raised bed gardening in general
Sent a sample from my three raised beds in the backyard to the county extension office last April and it came back at pH 7.8, which is way higher than I figured for soil I built myself. I had been dumping wood ash from the fire pit in there for two summers, thinking it was free fertilizer, and it turns out that stuff pushes pH up fast. My tomatoes sulked all June while the peppers loved it. So is it worth building your own soil mix and testing every year, or do you just buy bagged compost and not worry about it? Curious what the rest of you do about ash and pH.
