Gravel patio turned into a mud pit after one rainstorm in June

I put down 3 inches of crushed gravel over landscape fabric in my backyard in Austin, thought it would drain fine. First heavy rain last month and the whole thing shifted, fabric ripped in spots, and now there are trenches where the water runs. Turns out I needed a base layer of bigger rock and a proper slope, not just a level spread. My neighbor walked over and said "looks like a creek bed now" and he wasn't wrong. Anyone else deal with gravel washout and fix it with pavers or a different base material?
