I used to skip the mirror check, then I watched a guy in Lexington fix a fade with one look
Honestly I always thought the mirror thing was for newer barbers who did not trust their hands yet. I was at a shop in Lexington last Saturday waiting on my own cut and watched this older dude finish a skin fade, then step back and just stare at the client's head for a good 20 seconds before touching anything. He caught one tiny ridge above the left ear that I would have walked right past, and he cleaned it up in like 3 passes. I tried it on my next 6 clients and found something off on 4 of them, mostly necklines and around the temple. Ngl it feels awkward standing there doing nothing while the client waits, but nobody has complained yet. Do you all check from a few angles or just straight on, and how long do you let yourself stare before it gets weird?

That bit about standing there doing nothing while the client waits got me, because I have absolutely mastered the art of staring at a head like it owes me money. Took me way too long to admit the mirror wasn't just for the new guys, I used to think my hands knew everything until I found a whole chunk I missed behind the ear and had to play it cool like I meant to do that. These days I check straight on, then both sides, then tilt their chin down for the neckline, probably 10 to 15 seconds total. The trick for the weird part is I just tell them "let me take a look" so they know something is happening and it stops feeling like I'm zoning out. Four out of six is a wild hit rate though, that alone should shut up anybody who thinks the mirror is training wheels.
