Update: I used to think hot towel shaves were just a gimmick until Frank at the shop on 5th made me try one on him
Two years back I would have said hot towels were just for the movies, no real point in a modern shop. Then Frank, who has been cutting hair at his spot on 5th Street for 31 years, had me do a full shave on him with hot towels before each pass since his skin is sensitive. I watched how the hairs came up and how much less irritation he had compared to my usual dry routine, and I honestly felt a little dumb for brushing it off so long. Now I'm wondering how many of you keep a towel warmer running all day, or if you just do the cedarwood oil trick before the lather?

There was a barber on a podcast I listen to who said the towel step is less about the heat and more about the water sitting on the skin for a bit. He claimed just a hot towel for 30 seconds does more than any oil or pre-shave product. I tried it his way for a couple weeks and the difference in how the razor glides is real. Frank sounds like the kind of guy who has forgotten more about this than most of us will ever know. Does his skin do better with the towel steamed wet or just warmed dry?
