Debate: Do clients REALLY care about your portfolio or just your lowest rate?
I landed a $500 logo gig last week by showing a fancy PDF portfolio, but my buddy swears he closed a $3,000 contract just by being the cheapest guy on the call. Which side actually wins more bids, or is it all about the vibe you give off?

Honestly, I think your buddy is the exception and you're the rule. Most clients can smell a cheap price tag a mile away and wonder what corners you're cutting. Your portfolio is your only real proof you won't mess up their project, and that $500 gig could easily turn into referrals worth way more. Why would anyone drop real money on someone who just says they're the cheapest? Being the lowest bidder just screams "I'm desperate for anything" and that's not a good look for landing serious contracts.

and honestly i read this article recently about how freelancers who charge lower rates actually end up working with more demanding clients that drain their time. like those $500 gigs often come with people who want revisions forever and expect you to be available 24/7. your buddy mightve lucked out but most of the time those cheap jobs dont lead to referrals cause the clients themselves are shopping for the lowest price and will dump you for the next $500 person. its not just about looking desperate its about attracting the wrong crowd who treats you like a commodity not a professional. better to charge fair and filter out the tire kickers from the start imo.

Oh totally, @morganl71 nailed it, same thing happened to me with a cheap gig that turned into a nightmare client.
