My barber asked how I set prices, and his answer changed how I do quotes
I was getting a haircut last week at a shop on 5th Street and my barber asked what I do for work. I said I do freelance design and he asked how I figure out my rates, so I said I usually just guess based on what feels right. He laughed and said he did that for 6 years until he wrote down every cost for one month, rent, clippers, towels, products, taxes, and it came to $2,100. After that he stopped charging $20 a cut and set it at $35, and he said he lost about 10 regulars but his take home actually went up $600 a month. I went home and listed my own costs that night and found I was charging $45 an hour when my real floor was $58. Does anyone here keep a written cost sheet for their rates, and how often do you redo it?
