My old foreman in Des Moines told me to never put a materials number on the first estimate, and wow was he wrong
Back in March I bid a 60 foot driveway for a homeowner near Ankeny and remembered what my old foreman said, so I left materials off and just gave one lump price. The guy stared at my number for a minute and asked what the concrete alone would run him, and I had nothing to show him. He went with another crew that handed him a breakdown on the spot. Now I'm wondering if itemizing materials and labor is the better move for winning trust, or does it just give people room to nitpick? How do you all handle breaking out costs on the first bid?
