My old boss bet me $100 I couldn't take a full weekend off, and he was wrong in the worst way
Back in March I was running on fumes. Three straight weeks of client work, up at 5, in bed at 1. My old boss from my agency days, Dave, called me for something unrelated and I mentioned I felt wrecked. He goes, you can't just stop working, the work doesn't stop for you. He offered me $100 if I could go a whole Saturday and Sunday without opening my laptop.
So I did it. Drove out to a state park near Bastrop, left the phone in the glovebox, hiked around for two days. Sunday night I come home feeling great and open my email. One client fired me over a two day delay on a logo revision. That hundred bucks from Dave covered maybe a tenth of what I lost.
So yeah, the break helped my head but the timing cost me. Now I'm trying to figure out how to actually rest without getting punished for it. Do you guys tell clients up front that you don't answer on weekends, or do you just quietly check messages and hope nobody notices?
