One client call nearly ended my freelance career, here's what happened

Last Tuesday I was on a Zoom with a long-term client and they casually said 'we need to cut your rate by 30% or we're moving on'. I froze, said okay, and then spent the whole weekend feeling sick and doing work at 2am to make up for it. My partner finally sat me down and said 'why are you letting one person set your whole value?' That's when I realized I'd been treating every client like a boss instead of a partnership. I pushed back on Monday with a counter offer, lost the client, but gained a ton of time back. Has anyone else hit that moment where one person's words put them into full burnout spiral?

Honestly this hits so close to home. Tbh it wasnt even a client for me, it was one bad review that sent me down a similar rabbit hole. I spent three weeks redoing stuff that was already fine, losing sleep, and nearly quit the whole thing. My roommate finally pointed out I was treating a stranger's opinion like a court verdict. The funny thing is I started saying no to extra requests after that and somehow ended up with better projects and clients. That spiral you described is real, but sometimes it takes losing one person to see how much power you were handing them.
