That 52 hours a week stat on a freelance survey caught me off guard
I was poking around a survey from a freelance group last week and one number stuck with me: they found that freelancers who tracked their hours averaged around 52 a week, not the 40 I always assumed everyone worked. I have been running my own design work from my apartment in Portland for about two years and I thought I was busy at 45, but that stat made me actually log my time for seven days straight. Turns out I was at 58, and a chunk of it was dumb stuff like re-reading client emails at 10pm and messing with my invoice template. The scary part is I didn't feel burned out yet, just tired all the time. So now I am trying to figure out where the line is between hustling and slowly wrecking myself. For those of you who track hours, what number do you actually try to stay under each week?
