Stop using zip ties on shift housing, learned that the hard way
Honestly, saw a guy at a group ride last Saturday with his rear derailleur cable zip tied tight to the seat stay. He complained about crunchy shifting all day. I told him to snip it and use a proper clamp or at least a loop of slack. Tight zip ties pinch the housing and add friction that kills cable pull, especially on long runs. Has anyone else seen this mistake ruin a perfectly good drivetrain setup on a customer bike?
Last month I fixed a Trek where the guy had zip tied the housing every 6 inches along the whole top tube, and you could feel the drag just pulling the cable by hand. A zip tie snug enough to hold the housing does squeeze it, but the real killer is a sharp bend at the tie, not the tie itself. Run the housing with a gentle curve and leave just a hair of play, and a zip tie works fine for years without crunchy shifts.
