An old timer in Indianapolis swore I should never bill in installments, and he was dead wrong
When I started doing panel swaps back in 2019, this retired contractor in Indianapolis swore up and down that splitting a bill into payments makes folks think you are broke and they stop paying. I tried it his way for a year and watched a $3,400 job sit unpaid for 11 weeks while the homeowner kept stalling. Once I switched to 40% up front and 30% at rough-in, people started paying on time and nobody ever questioned it. Anyone else find that one big bill scares folks off more than a few smaller ones?
Not sure it's about looking broke as much as how people budget, most folks get paid every two weeks so a big chunk due at once feels like a gut punch they keep putting off. Smaller payments let them match your bill to their paycheck instead of raiding savings.
