Appreciation post: the bookkeeper in Omaha who told me to bill on the 1st, not the 15th
I grab coffee with a retired bookkeeper named Marge every couple months. She ran the books for a small print shop here in Omaha for 22 years. Last time we talked I was complaining about a job that went 40 days past due. She asked when I sent the bill. I said the 15th, like always. She laughed and said "you're paying for the other guys' payroll out of your own pocket." She explained that most businesses cut checks in the first few days of the month, so a bill that lands mid-month just sits in a pile for 3 more weeks. I switched my send date to the 1st for 3 invoices now and two of them got paid inside 9 days. Kind of mad I never thought about it. What send date works for you folks, and does it change by type of customer?
